Affilogic is developing a novel class of binding proteins, Nanofitins®, which are antibody-mimetics. These alternative scaffolds demonstrate superior pharmaceutical properties: high affinity and controlled specificity, excellent druggability (very stable >65°C and highly soluble), fast generation process and cost-effective manufacturing in standard bacterial strains. Thanks to these competitive advantages, Nanofitin®-based drugs aim at overcoming antibodies limitations, in particular by allowing better tissue penetration (20 X smaller than antibodies) and patient-friendly formulations. Affilogic is investigating with several industrial and academic partners therapeutic fields such as Inflammation (oral administration, skin permeation), CNS (delivery through BBB), Ophthalmology (cornea penetration), Infectious diseases (targeting of antimicrobial agents) and Oncology (Nanofitin-Drug-Conjugate).

Cytune develops CYP0150, a super IL-15, resulting from the fusion of huIL-15 and the sushi+ domain of its R-alpha chain receptor. CYP0105 uniquely mimics the major mechanism of action of IL-15 (transpresentation) even in pathologic conditions (cancer, infection). It restores and enhances both the innate and adaptive NK and immune T cell proliferation and activity. CYP0150 is a cytokine restoring a potent but balanced immune response and therefore represents a unique opportunity relative to the successful but increasingly crowded family of anti-immunosuppressive antibodies such anti-CTLA4 and anti-PD1. In mice and monkeys studies, CPY0150 alone and in combination was shown to have promizing efficacy in different tumor models in addition to have an attractive safety and PK profile. CYP0150 was shown to be superior to IL-2. Finally, CYP0150 is produced via a simple and classical pharmaceutical production system. Moreover, Cytune develops a broad portfolio of potent immunocytokines, i.e. monoclonal antibody fused to CYP0150. These ICKs have a promising future as they enable to: • manage the product Life Cycle Management for existing blockbusters (generating new IP to face coming patent expirations) • increase the efficacy of existing or future antibodies while reducing their tox profile.

Based on IMX313, a proprietary antigen re-engineering technology, IMAXIO is seeking partners who plan to develop a vaccine or an immunotherapy with antigens of limited immunogenicity. Indeed thanks to collaborations with international academic institutions (Jenner Insitute, EVI, USDA, Inserm...) and industrial key players (Merial, further confidential partners...), IMAXIO has been able to develop an early clinical stage vaccine pipeline in TB, malaria, S. aureus, flu, oncology, veterinary fertility control & cryptosporidiosis. IMX313 has also proven its efficacy in 4 models (mouse, rabbit, swine & non-human primate) by providing: - increases in both B & T cell immunogenicity (including CD4 and CD8) - protection in challenges (even with a self-antigen) - compatibility with subunit, DNA and viral vector vaccines (MVA & AdHu5) - and synergy with regular adjuvant technologies IMX313 could solve problems of suboptimal efficacy of vaccine & immunotherapy candidates in major indications. Therefore, IMAXIO is seeking both academic and industrial partners who have know-how around an antigen of limited immunogenicity, and want to develop a vaccine or an immunotherapy in additional indications.

IMeBIO designs and produces mobile BSL 2 & 3 laboratories. These mobile laboratories are designed around the plug & play philosophy. Their reliability, mobility (maritime, road and air transportation available) and standalone qualities (water, electricity, and special fluids) allow their fast installation and use in any area of the world. In addition, thanks to their innovative design, these modular laboratories provide outstanding security and containment guarantees. Consequently, these products respect the higher standards and regulations (e.g. ISO 16 644-4 and ISO 14 644-1, regulation concerning the biological risks and containment requirements for the use and manipulation of GMO). These mobile laboratories, a quasi-unique concept on the market today, come from an innovative approach driven by 5 principles: - Optimizing hygiene by using welded partition walls (no silicone) and rounded corners. - Offering maximum security thanks to a mix of innovative and proven solutions in terms of containment, ergonomics and fluids management. - Providing true energy autonomy based on technologies allowing a prompt mobility, an easy transportation and reduced operating costs. - Supplying products designed with high technology materials guarantying an outstanding containment and nonporous surfaces (synthesized resin). - Allowing an easy maintenance for our customers.

ONTOFORCE is a Belgian start-up that develops and implements innovative technologies to improve information flows and information management. The acknowledgment of renowned institutes confirms that we’re on the right track. From day one, we have been getting the support of innovation agency IWT, research institute iMinds and the SOFI fund of the Flemish government. This resulted in a seed capital round of 1 million EUR in January 2013. In the coming years, ONTOFORCE wants to make a crucial difference for patients worldwide. We’re committed to deliver a groundbreaking application that will make drug discovery far more effective. Because so many people need personalized medicines today – not tomorrow.
More
Linked Data have become popular as a means to exchange structured information on the web. An increasing number of consumer applications are now relying on the availability for providing data-driven analytics services. Hundreds of open and private datasets are already in the Linked Data cloud, allowing very agile re-use of information. However, the quality among these datasets varies and very few of these services are entirely reliable when it comes to uptime, completeness, performance and usability. That’s why the first priority is to improve the performance, benchmarking and reliability of data sources exposed. The second step is to solve the challenges posed by the so-called “Big Data” optimizing data access and data security. Moreover, there’s a growing need for statistical and machine learning techniques necessary to explore and disqover the knowledge concealed in many datasets of increasing complexity. These datasets can be situated in in healthcare and life sciences (e.g. ChemBL, Uniprot, GO, WIkiPathways, Diseasome, Sider…) and clinical trials or patient-group contributed information (Clinical Research Results, PatientsLikeMe, LinkedCT…). And last but not least, the way information is presented to researchers in this Linked Data space needs far more attention than ever. ONTOFORCE therefore focuses on an optimized user experience, which will improve knowledge discovery. For many years, most of the knowledge discovery tools have been perceived as expert tools. As a result, they didn’t appeal to the common user. Today, user experience experts are involving end-users in the development of more user-friendly solutions.

In a randomized phase II pancreatic cancer trial, our company, ParinGenix, Inc., made the unexpected observation that our compound, ODSH, a non-anticoagulant heparin derivative, appears to have a striking and statistically significant effect mitigating thrombocytopenia and accelerating platelet recovery in patients receiving dose-intensive (Gemcitabine + Abraxane) chemotherapy. Since that discovery, and in collaboration with the hematology division at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, we have identified a clear and very novel mechanism of action for this therapeutic effect, and have confirmed activity in accelerating platelet recovery in animal models of chemotherapy and radiation-induced thrombocytopenia. The mechanism by which ODSH mitigates thrombocytopenia and accelerates platelet recovery is through intervention in a negative paracrine loop, which has been previously described, but little exploited as a potential therapeutic avenue: blocking the negative paracrine effect of platelet factor 4, released into the bone marrow microenvironment by apoptotic chemotherapy or radiation-injured megakaryocytes, on megakaryopoiesis and platelet recovery. Our next steps will be to initiate a clinical trial in AML seeking to accelerate platelet recovery, thereby reducing the need for platelet transfusions and the risk of life-threatening bleeding episodes in patients receiving induction or consolidation therapy. Later this year, we will initiate a similar phase II trial in children with recurrent solid tumors receiving the “ICE” chemotherapy regimen.

Promethera® Biosciences' mission is to discover, develop and commercialize cell therapy products to treat liver diseases in an innovative way using stem cell from healthy human livers. The company is a spin-off from the Laboratory of Paediatric Hepatology and Cell Therapy in Brussels, Belgium. Promethera® Biosciences develops a new cell therapy product using allogeneic stem cells expanded from healthy human liver tissue. This product called Promethera® HepaStem aims to treat a wide variety of liver genetic and acquired diseases affecting children and adults. The innovation resides in both the simplicity of the treatment, which doesn’t require radical surgery (compared to liver transplantation), and in the wide variety of liver pathologies that can be addressed with the same product. This product has received two orphan drug designations from the European Community and the FDA for the treatment of Crigler-Najjar syndrome and urea cycle disease. In conjunction, Promethera® Biosciences is developing, Promethera® HepaScreen, a unique cell model for the pharmaceutical industry to mimic metabolism and detoxification of new drugs by the human liver. Both products are based on a newly discovered and patented stem cell type.
